Biloxi, Mississippi is located in Harrison County and is an area with a booming seaport and tourism based economy.  Biloxi is also home to Keesler Airforce Base, which accounts for almost a quarter of the area’s employment. Nearby Gulfport is home to the Navy Seabees and the Naval Construction Battalion Center. The seafood industry including shrimp workers, seafood processing, and boat building is also crucial to the area’s economy.

Biloxi’s tourism economy is based in large part on casinos.  Hurricane Katrina destroyed many of the casinos but eight have reopened since the hurricane. These include: Grand Biloxi Casino Hotel, Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, Isle of Capri, Palace Casino Resort, Treasure Bay Casino, Boomtown, and Beau Rivage.  The area is also home to a memorial to Katrina victims that was built by the television show Extreme Makeover Home Edition.

Just off Biloxi’s coast is ship’s island which features beaches, fishing, shelling, and wildlife. A prominent feature along the coast is the Biloxi lighthouse, built in 1848, it is one of the oldest lighthouses along the gulf coast and today serves as a museum for residents and visitors.  Other areas of interest include the OHR-Okeefe museum, the Maritime and Seafood Industry museum and the Mardi Gras museum. The Mardi Gras museum is located in the historic Magnolia Hotel and features costumes, photos and memorabilia.  Also of historical significance is Beauvoir, the home of Jefferson Davis. It is now open to the public and features a civil war museum, Davis’s library, the Tomb of the Unknown Confederate Soldier and the Confederate Veterans cemetery.
